OUT ON 21st October

A Halloween Special

Inspired by the 1973 film The Exorcist, a supernatural horror film directed by William Friedkin & produced by William Peter Blatty, who adapted his own 1971 novel. The film starred Ellen Burstyn, Max von Sydow, Jason Miller, and Linda Blair, and follows the demonic possession of a young girl (Regan) and the attempt to rescue her through an exorcism by two Catholic priests.

Exorcist Rap was recorded many years ago, on analogue 8 Track Tape, when my then studio was built around a Tascam 38 x ½ inch recorder, a struggling to survive Mixing Desk, a Roland TR909 Rhythm Composer and very little outboard equipment!

Earlier this year, I acquired another Tascam 38 and had it fully rebuilt and all my tapes baked and restored and came across Exorcist Rap, and decided to run with it for Halloween! We discovered that we had bounced a lot of tracks together for extra recording space and sorting out the good from the bad was a mammoth editing task for Nigel Browning Ward the producer. He slowly and painfully stripped the song down and rebuilt it to about 30 individual tracks in total, he then decided what to keep and set about creating this digital mix.

The song focuses on Regan McNeil, the young girl character in the film, she was played by Linda Blair who was 12 when she was cast for the part, later earning her a Golden Globe Award.

It was a lot of fun making the video, and spookily, on the set, a lighting bulb exploded and briefly set fire to the green screen backdrop, hastily put out by my crew armed with ‘at the ready’ fire extinguishers!

I hope you enjoy it !

The recording was a collaboration of a number of friends and musicians and no-one can quite remember exactly who did what : and exactly who was there in the studio !

Definitely present were :- Debbie Curtis, Euan Leckie, Andy Grover, Simon Lague, Mark Lague, Paul Finbar Saunders, Dave Beeson, Nigel Browning Ward and possibly one or two others!

The original track was recorded and mixed in just a few hours and went off on cassette tapes to those involved for personal use and has quietly waited until now to materialize!

He fought her for her body and never let her rest

He forced upon his presence for she was now possessed

He used her as a figure head to let them see his path

In turn they strapped her to the bed

Yet still he made them cower

The demon didn’t listen he thought only of the Priest

He’d come for a single mission to proclaim himself the beast

The woman didn’t know it her daughter had gone away

She couldn’t quite believe it the devil was here to stay

Go fetch the shrink don’t you think she’s gone crazy

Go get the Priest to kill the beast up inside her

He fought her for her body he never let her rest

He forced upon his presence for she was now possessed

He used her as a figure head to let them see his path

In turn they strapped her to the bed

Yet still he made them cower

The demon didn’t listen he thought only of the Priest

He’d come for a single mission to proclaim himself the beast

The woman didn’t know it her daughter had gone away

She couldn’t quite believe it the devil was here to stay

Go fetch the shrink don’t you think she’s gone crazy

Cut up inside don’t try to hide the devil’s inside you

Don’t mean a thing cos she’s turned green

Can’t you help me

Go get the Priest you have the beast up inside you
